چکیده
Bottlenose dolphins are a behaviorally complex, social species that display variety of behaviors. Because this, it is important for zoological facilities to strive ensure animals species-appropriate levels behavior. The current study part the multi-institutional entitled “Towards understanding welfare cetaceans in zoos and aquariums” commonly referred as Cetacean Welfare Study. All participating were accredited by Alliance Marine Mammal Parks Aquariums and/or Association Zoos Aquariums. Behavioral data collected on 47 bottlenose representing two subspecies, Tursiops truncatus aduncus , at 25 facilities. behaviors group related activity ( active ) well interacting with conspecifics interact conspecific examined their relationships both animal management factors habitat characteristics. behavioral state rate positively frequency receiving new forms environmental enrichment. Both inversely random scheduling Additional results suggested was daytime spatial experience males displayed more than females. Overall, techniques such type timing enrichment may be enhance behavior characteristics or size habitat. Information gained from this can help manage programs relation

Decades-long social memory in bottlenose dolphins.
Long-term social memory is important, because it is an ecologically relevant test of cognitive capacity, it helps us understand which social relationships are remembered and it relates two seemingly disparate disciplines: cognition and sociality. For dolphins, long-term memory for conspecifics could help assess social threats as well as potential social or hunting alliances in a very fluid and ...

Human activities can affect the behaviour of mammals through the modification of habitats, changes in predation pressure or alterations in food distribution and availability. We analysed the association and ranging patterns of 242 individually identified bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops aduncus) in eastern Moreton Bay, Queensland, Australia, and distinguished two separate communities of dolphins. ...

Maintenance work on the harbor of Setúbal, in Portugal, required the removal of a 14-m deep rocky outcrop at the ship maneuver area, using about 35 kg of Gelamonite, a nitroglycerin-based high-explosive. This important harbor is located in the Sado estuary, a biologically rich environment and an important feeding area for a resident community of bottlenose dolphins. Using different safe range c...

An important reason to investigate dolphins is that they exhibit striking similarities with humans. Like us, they use tools: dolphins break off sponges and wear them over their rostrum while foraging on the seafloor (Smolker et al 1997). Dolphins are also capable of recognizing their body in front of a mirror (Reiss & Marino 2001). Closely related with their capacity to see through sound is the...

A fundamental question concerning group-living species is what factors influence the evolution of sociality. Although several studies link adult social bonds to fitness, social patterns and relationships are often formed early in life and are also likely to have fitness consequences, particularly in species with lengthy developmental periods, extensive social learning, and early social bond-for...
